Neighbour Day 29 March

Neighbour Day is an "annual celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with this who live in their neighbourhoods." Social connections with others are beneficial both mentally, emotionally or even physically. Talking to a neighbour could spark some advice, a laugh or even a stroll around the block.

The theme of this years Neighbour Day is social connection emphasising the importance connecting with the people around you is in forming strong communities.

Easter is a major Christian holiday, which this year falls on Sunday April 12 according to the Ecclesiastical Calendar. Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Christian Bible's New Testament. Jesus was a Jew, who had the Last Supper the night before his Crucifixion (on Good Friday), a Passover meal with his disciples. Therefore Easter often coincides with the major Jewish holiday of Passover or Pesach (8 - 16 April this year), which celebrates the biblical liberation of the Israelites from slavery.

For many, Easter is a time of rebirth and renewal. For others, it is long weekend filled with chocolate. But generally for all, it is a relaxing time spent with family and friends.

Ramadan 23 April - 23 May

In Islam, traditions and holidays take place according to the lunar Hijri calendar. The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is Ramadan, the month of fasting, which this year is observed from 23 April May to 23 May June.

The Quran, the Islamic holy text, is believed to have been revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by God, and Ramadan commemorates Muhammad's first revelation. During Ramadan, it is mandatory for all Muslims who have reached puberty to fast (from food, drink, smoking, sex, etc.) from sunrise to sunset, as well as abstain from any potentially sinful behaviour. These prohibitions are often accompanied by increased prayer, ritual, and acts of good will.

The celebration encourages the community to gather in God’s remembrance as well as share the evening meal, the breaking of fast known as Iftar. This physically demanding but spiritually rewarding and incredibly reverent tradition is considered one of the five Pillars of Islam, and is an extremely important time of the year for all people of Islamic faith, both locally and around the world.

ANZAC Day 25 April

105 years ago sixteen ships left from Station Pier, Melbourne Victoria (17th October 1914), heading for Albany, Western Australia, to join the first Australian/New Zealand convoy of 38 ships departing on November 1st heading for Egypt.

ANZAC Day - 25 April marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
