Fantastic Film Festival

Updated: Sep 29, 2020

Lido Cinemas regularly hosts a range of film events, from the Jewish International Film Festival (JIFF) to the Children's International Film Festival (CHIFF). These events, which present an extended programme of various films of a shared genre, theme, and/or origin, draw diverse audiences and bring cultural value to the local area. Lido is kicking off 2020 with a film festival on the more absurd side, the Fantastic Film Festival Australia (FFFA).

By Ellis Curmi of Lido Cinemas:

January saw the launch of the FFFA with the Victorian premiere of The Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is a psychological horror film directed by Robert Eggers which focuses on two lighthouse keepers (Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson) who are trapped on a mysterious and remote island. The film is a hallucinatory tale of cabin fever. The film’s general release is in February.

The premiere was a huge success! In the four years that I have worked at Lido, I have never seen our cinema so busy. All eight of our indoor cinemas were completely sold out. It was undoubtedly busy, but the buzz in the air kept everybody ecstatic and helped to create a great atmosphere.

This is the first year that the FFFA has been running at Lido, and the festival will commence on 20 February until 4 March 2020. This wonderful collection of films has been curated by Lido’s very own manager Hudson Sowada, who is excited to share with you some of the best of counter-cultural cinema focusing on the weird and absurd. The films' genres range from psychological thriller to science fiction and horror.

Over the course of the festival, we will be showing twenty-five different films, including animations and a documentary. The Lido will also be hosting a trivia night to put your knowledge of the strange and the absurd, the horrific and the hilarious, and all things fantastic to the test. For those interested, we will also be running a Dungeon & Dragons game night as well.

We look forward to seeing you then. All further information can be found at lidocinemas.com.au, or alternatively come in and have a friendly chat.
