Lido Review: Top 5 Festive Films
Written by Ellis Curmi of Lido Cinemas.
The month of Christmas is here! I know what you're all thinking... how on earth did this year go so fast? And, more importantly, what films am I going to watch to get into the Christmas spirit? Lucky for you, my friends at Lido and I have compiled a Christmas 'must-watch' list.
Elf (2003): This is personally my favourite film on the list. Will Ferrell hilariously plays a human raised by elves who, upon discovering that he is in fact not an elf, leaves the North Pole in search of his biological dad. Directed by Jon Favreau, now better known for directing Iron Man and the more recent Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Elf takes us back to a less serious and more playful story with some serious heart.
Home Alone (1990): I am going to start by confessing that I have not actually seen Home Alone, but I have been told it’s a must see. I have put it on my calendar for this December, so you should too! Home Alone focuses on Kevin, a young boy who is accidentally left behind when his family goes travelling. At first, he is delighted to be 'home alone', but he is soon forced to protect his house as robbers try to break in.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992): A fuzzy take on the 1943 Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol. Be honest with yourself - when was the last time you watched a Muppet movie? Do your family a favour this Christmas and share this special film with the younglings. Or alternatively, treat yourself after a long day of work and dive back into this incredible world of Kermit the Frog and friends.
The Polar Express (2004): The Polar Express takes you on an extraordinary journey to the North Pole. The film follows a young boy on his quest to meet Santa Claus. At the time the film was made, cutting edge motion capture technology was used to animate characters. Remarkably, the animation still holds up.
The Grinch (1966, 2000, 2018): Everybody loves a good anti-hero, and honestly there aren’t many better than the Grinch on his huge quest to try and steal Christmas. Based on the classic Dr. Seuss book, both the live action and animated versions are hilarious and will bring out a side of Christmas in you that you didn’t know you had!
You can access all these films on Apple TV, online, or hopefully on your favourite streaming service or free-to-air channels. We look forward to seeing you all at Lido over this holiday period!
