Retail Revamp

Some retail buildings in Glenferrie Hawthorn have recently opened with new uses and fresh looks, after being revamped by creative retailers.

826 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn has been vacant for at least two years, and now restaurant Colourful Yunnan (image below) has opened. The premises was previously home to Apple retailer, Streetwise. The recent renovation has completely altered the space and now includes a mezzanine level which provides a large number of restaurant seating and creates an eating environment unique to the street. Colourful Yunnan serves cuisine from the Yunnan province in southern China.

Roys Barber (image right) has taken the recently under-utilised area of an old garage and brought in a fresh barber shop. Located at 715A Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, behind Haigh's Chocolates, accessed through the laneway adjacent to 2XU.

A mixed history, having previously been home to an antenna repair shop, furniture restoration and an antique shop storage space, the newly renovated space has taken on a completely new feel.

Recycled timber has been used for the interior beams, some timber was brought in and some already part of the building, brickwork has been redone and the corrugated iron roof remains the same, fusing both new and old creating a rustic yet clean and tidy barber shop.

These revamped retail spaces demonstrate how spaces within existing buildings can evolve and be reinvented to respond to the demands and needs of the Glenferrie Hawthorn community.
